Personalized SEO for Your Business Growth
Freelance SEO Consultant in Brighton
I'm James. I help small businesses get found on Google. With agency-level SEO experience, minus the agency price tag and account managers.
SEO Built Around Your Business, Not a Template
Every project starts with your commercial goals and a clear plan for reaching them. I keep everything transparent — what I'm doing, why I'm doing it, and what it's delivering — so you always know where your investment is going.
Strategy First
Before any work begins, I audit your site, your competitors and your market to find the biggest opportunities — then build a prioritised roadmap around them, so effort goes where it will have the most impact.
Hands-On Delivery
I do the work myself, from technical fixes to content and local optimisation. No juniors learning on your account, no outsourcing — the person you speak to is the person doing the work.
Honest Reporting
Clear monthly reports covering traffic, rankings, enquiries and revenue — with plain-English explanations of what changed, what I worked on and what's next. No jargon, no fluff.
Built for What's Next
Search now includes AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini as well as ten blue links. I optimise for visibility across all of it, so your business keeps getting found as search keeps changing.
Who I Work With
Two ways of working. One point of contact.
I work in two ways: as a strategic SEO consultant guiding the direction of your campaign, or hands-on across longer, broader projects. Either way, you deal with me directly.
Brands & SMEs
Efficient SEO consultancy built to grow your brand and drive sales, whatever your size or sector. From strategy and audits through to implementation, you get senior-level work without agency overheads — and a single point of contact who knows your business inside out.
Agencies
White-label and overflow SEO support for agencies that need reliable extra capacity. I slot into your processes and tools, deliver work your clients will be happy to put their name to, and stay invisible if that's how you need it.
Freelancers & Independents
Working for yourself, your website is your shop window. I help freelancers and independent professionals get found by the clients they want — with practical, right-sized SEO that fits a solo budget and delivers enquiries, not just traffic.
How My Freelance SEO Services Work
Every project starts with research, not templates. There's no one-size-fits-all approach: the first phase identifies exactly what your business, website and audience need before any strategy is set.
That research phase covers:
01
Your business goals and KPIs
02
Your target audience
03
Keyword research and the search landscape
04
Traffic and performance benchmarking
05
Competitor review
06
Technical SEO audit
07
Content audit
08
Strategy, roadmap and resource requirements
09
Campaign setup and implementation
From there, you have a measurable, well-founded SEO campaign, and I work directly with your team throughout to keep it understood, managed and implemented properly.
About me
Hi, I'm James — Brighton-based SEO consultant
I've spent the last 8+ years doing SEO across agencies, in-house teams and major brands. In 2024 I went freelance, because I kept seeing small businesses either priced out of good SEO — or paying for bad SEO they couldn't understand.
When you work with me, you're working with me directly. No junior handoffs, no account managers, no fluff. Just clear advice, honest expectations and SEO that actually moves the needle.
Why SEO still matters in 2026
Search is still where most buying journeys begin — around two-thirds of online experiences start with a search engine, and nearly half of all Google searches are from people looking for something local.
But search has changed. More than half of searches now end without a click, AI answers appear across a growing share of results, and shoppers are researching in tools like ChatGPT and Gemini as well as Google. Ranking well is no longer enough on its own — you need to be visible wherever your customers are actually looking.
That's the work I do. I'm a freelance SEO consultant based in Brighton, and I build strategies around your commercial goals: more of the right traffic, more enquiries, more sales — not vanity metrics. Because organic visibility compounds over time, SEO consistently delivers leads at a fraction of the cost of paid channels.
You work with me directly from day one. No account managers, no hand-offs, no jargon — just clear, honest work on the things that will actually move the needle for your business.
Transparency & Reporting
How I Measure SEO Success
Every SEO project I take on is tied to clear business goals and measurable KPIs agreed at the start. I don't hide behind vanity metrics or vague reports — you get full transparency on what I'm doing, why I'm doing it, and how it's affecting your bottom line. Because you work directly with me, communication is built into the process, not bolted on.
Monthly SEO Reports
Detailed monthly reports covering organic traffic, keyword rankings, search visibility, conversions and revenue attribution. Every report explains what changed, what I worked on and what's planned next. No jargon, no fluff.
KPIs Aligned to Your Goals
I track the metrics that matter to your business: organic revenue, conversion rates, enquiries and leads, target keyword positions and share of voice against your competitors. Your KPIs are set around your commercial goals, not generic SEO benchmarks.
Direct Communication
You work with me directly — no account managers, no hand-offs. Regular check-ins, a shared workspace, and straight answers whenever you need them. I work as an extension of your team, not a black box that disappears between reports.
Audits & Competitor Analysis
Every engagement starts with a comprehensive audit covering technical health, on-page optimisation, content gaps and backlink profile. I benchmark your site against competitors to find the biggest opportunities and build a prioritised strategy around them.
Results from the work, not the pitch
These are real campaigns I led before going freelance. Client names and identifying detail have been removed at their request, but the numbers and the strategy are exactly as they happened.
Recovering visibility for a global streetwear retailer
A well-known fashion retailer was losing organic ground across three markets. I ran the technical audit, found the pagination issue blocking crawlers from deeper product pages, and rebuilt the content and internal linking strategy across 100+ collection pages.
- 36%increase in organic impressions
- 40%lift in non-branded clicks YoY
- 8%growth in organic revenue share
- Diagnosed and fixed a pagination fault blocking crawler access to product pages
- Built a scaled content workflow to write region-specific copy for AU, UK and US collection pages without duplicating content
- Rebuilt site navigation and taxonomy around actual user search behaviour
- Rolled out an internal linking framework to strengthen key category pages
Defending a long-term B2B programme through a Google update, then pushing it to a new high
I took over this account partway through an existing multi-year organic programme. Within the first year, a Google Helpful Content update hit the site hard. I led the recovery, then rebuilt the strategy around AI-era search behaviour, taking the account to its best-ever result by the end of my time on it.
- 2024Helpful Content update impact absorbed and diagnosed
- 5pillar strategy built for AI-era search visibility
- New highorganic performance reached by the end of the engagement
- Diagnosed the cause of a 2024 Helpful Content update hit and rebuilt the recovery plan
- Designed a five-pillar strategy to keep the account visible as search shifted toward AI-generated answers
- Maintained the account's local footprint and category authority across depot regions while rebuilding
- Took the programme from its Year 4 low point to its strongest year of organic performance by Year 6
Building topical authority without a product catalogue
A national trade supplier had strong brand recognition but no product catalogue to compete on search with bigger retailers. I built collection-level content to establish authority instead, and overhauled local listings across 60+ locations.
- 185%growth in category keyword visibility
- 144%YoY growth in local store visibility
- 33content pieces written to build authority
- Wrote 30+ collection-level content pieces to signal trade expertise without individual product pages
- Refined headings, metadata and FAQs across key commercial pages
- Optimised Google Business Profiles across every store location
- Ran a full technical audit and fixed crawlability issues holding pages back
SEO Questions Answered
What is SEO and why does my business need it?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of improving your website so it appears higher in Google and other search engines. For small businesses and e-commerce brands, SEO is essential — it helps more people find you organically, without relying on paid ads.
How long does SEO take to work?
It depends on your website’s current condition, competition, and goals. Generally, you can expect to see noticeable improvements within 3–6 months. SEO is a long-term investment — the more consistent your strategy, the stronger your results.
What’s the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?
On-page SEO focuses on everything within your website: content, keywords, headings, and user experience.
Off-page SEO covers external factors like backlinks, brand mentions, and online reputation.
Both work together to help search engines trust and rank your site higher.
Can SEO help my local business?
Absolutely. Local SEO helps your business show up in Google Maps and “near me” searches. I optimise your Google Business Profile, local citations, and location-based keywords to attract nearby customers ready to buy.
What does an SEO consultant actually do?
An SEO consultant analyses, plans, and implements strategies to improve your website’s visibility in search results. That means researching keywords, fixing technical issues, improving site structure, and helping you create content that drives real results — not just clicks.
Do I need ongoing SEO?
Yes — SEO isn’t a one-time fix. Search algorithms, competitors, and customer behaviour change constantly. Ongoing SEO keeps your site healthy, ranking, and ahead of the curve.
Can you guarantee #1 rankings?
No honest SEO professional can guarantee top rankings — Google’s algorithms are always evolving. What I can guarantee is a strategy focused on best practices, data-driven results, and consistent growth in traffic and visibility.
Do you only work with Brighton businesses?
No — I’m based in Brighton and love working locally, but I work with small businesses across the UK remotely.
